Make Money With Adsense – Ad Placement

March 30th, 2009

Sup peoples, I hope everyone is well. I’m going to make this a short post I think as I’ve got plenty of web related stuff to be doing in my challenge to make money with adsense. Remember I’ve set myself the goal of reaching 50$ a day in the next 3 months and now that I think about it I realise this is going to real tough to achieve. It will certainly take a huge amount of effort if I’m going to accomplish my make money online goals.

Like I said in my last post, I’m going to go over the layout and what I think is the Best AdSense Placements for my first ‘Make Money With Adsense’ Site. I’m just going to keep things nice and simple at the moment and go for a clean layout with a couple of adsense blocks on each page, I want a high click through rate but I’m trying to avoid the spammy ‘made for Adsense’ look at the same time. Its important to experiment with your ad placements but if you start off with a simple layout its easy to change things up later on and compare results.

As you can see I’m only going to have a 468×15 Google link banner and one 300×250 Adsense block on each page. Many people would go for a higher concentration of ads on their pages but with the very small numbers of traffic I’ve had on the site so far I seem to be getting a high CTR so we’ll keep it like this until traffic increases then we can have a bit of fun swapping stuff around.

I imagine I could increase CTR even further if I moved all the text on the page under the 300×250 block but I’ve got a feeling Google might frown on this, thinking I’m trying to dupe visitors into clicking by having the ads directly below the article title.

As far as the text on the page is concerned I like to have around 300-350 keyword rich words on the page. We need to give Google something to get its teeth into so it knows exactly what our pages are about to guarantee we get appropriate targeted ads served to our pages. This, along with other good on page SEO practices, will also help to improve our chances of ranking well in the search engine results pages. I’ll go into SEO a bit deeper in a future post but if its something you have trouble with there are plenty of resources on the web to help you out.

Adsense Setup

When creating the ads for your site ensure that you use the channels facility so you know what blocks your visitors are clicking on.

As far as colours as concerned you want your ads to blend in with the content of your site so the could appear to be part of the navigation to a Internet browser who isn’t paying too much attention. Use black for the text and the URL, blue for the title, make the background the same as your site and remove the border. I’ve heard reports that making the title red increases click through rate on some sites but I’ll experiment with that later.

Next time On Adsense | Make Money Online

That’s for today! I’m off to some serious work on my sites, you should do the same. Next time I might do a post on my attempts at on-page SEO to see if we can get my site further up the SERPS.

If any newbies out there have any particular make money online advice they’d like to hear, leave a comment and I’ll try my best to answer your questions.

Adsense Money – Setting Up My First Site

March 27th, 2009

One of the most difficult steps to take when trying to make money with Adsense is finding a profitable niche where you can build a website that will attract sufficient numbers of traffic.

I’m going to avoid the ‘Finding A Niche’ step with my first proper Adsense site as I already have a site up which I built last year to do affiliate marketing with. The project didn’t work out as I had planned but the site is prefect for a little ‘Make Money With Adsense‘ project seeing as it is in a high traffic niche with high cost per click and the site has potential to do well in the search engine results pages.

I’m only going to mention the niche I’m targeting once in this post because I want Google to understand this site is purely about how to make money online. If I start mentioning too many unrelated keywords early on in the life of this site I might confuse Google, and we can’t have that!

So I’m going to get started off on my Adsense adventure with a Payday Loans site which was originally built to promote a product from commission junction. This was really my first ever attempt to make money online but I realized soon after I started that the niche was way too hard to crack for an Internet marketing newbie like myself.

I did all the standard SEO stuff like submitting the site to directories, article marketing, social bookmarking and building a small network of free sites to link back to the main site. In the end, with all my work I managed to get 100 clicks through my affiliate links and a grand total of zero sales. I threw some Adsense ads up in a desperate attempt to salvage some money from my work but with very low traffic it was apparent I wasn’t going to get rich any time soon so I moved on to something else.

The interesting thing about the site was that it was obvious straight away that if I could just funnel a decent chunk of traffic to the pages it definitely had the potential to make money from adsense clicks as both CPC and click through rate were high. The site went on the back burner anyway as I felt I would be unable to generate the traffic needed.

Step forward to today and I’ve decided to get serious and try to make money with Adsense. Since this site is already up and running and Google knows it exists I thought I’d give it another chance to bring me in the big bucks. As luck would have it the site seems to have jumped up the Google search engine results pages a little over the past week and I’m actually getting a few visitors a day at the moment. With concerted effort on my part I reckon I can turn this one into a nice little earner. If nothing else we will gain some valuable experience in the process.

The site as it stands today:

  • Originally built 6 months ago and hasn’t been touched since December
  • A static site meaning its easy to manipulate Adsense layout
  • On page search engine optimization not up to scratch
  • Contains a home page, an article index and 8 articles aimed at specific keywords
  • Low traffic with only a few visitors a day
  • One of my main keywords is in the URL

Here’s how the site is doing in the SERPS for a few select keywords:

The structure of the site up this point has been as follows:

In my attempt to make money with Adsense I’m obviously going to have to make some changes to the site to get the results I’m looking for. As I’m not the world’s greatest Adsense or SEO expert (yet!) I’m going have to play a bit of a guessing game based on my past efforts with Adsense, my experience with affiliate marketing and everything I’ve learned from various people on the Internet. I’m sure as this challenge progresses and my experience level increases I’ll revisit my sites and make improvements.

Here’s What I’m Doing To Increase my Chances Of Making Money With Adsense

  1. Improve the structure of my site making it easier for Google’s spiders to find their way around
  2. Remove as many external links as possible from the site to prevent Google’s spiders from leaving
  3. Make all external links that are left “nofollow”
  4. Improve the articles on the site by increasing keyword density, ensuring all page titles are relevant and increase word count
  5. Remove all affiliate links to allow me to concentrate solely on making money from Adsense
  6. Rearrange Adsense Blocks to ensure maximum Click Through Rate

New Site Structure To Increase Adsense Revenue

If you want to get the maximum number of visitors to your site from Google then your going to have to pander to the robots that visit your pages. With this in mind I’ve decided to rearrange my site to keep the Big G as happy as possible.

Beforehand my home page only linked to an article page which then contained a link to all my articles, now I want to link my pages together in a chain so its easier for Google to travel from one page to the next. I’ll put a keyword rich link at the bottom of every page hoping that Google will have no choice to crawl the entirety of my site in the sequence that I decide.

That’s all for today, I should really get some work done. I’ll go into ad placement in my next post but if you have any questions about how to make money with google adsense, let me know!

Past Adsense Revenue And Future Goals

March 25th, 2009

I’m hoping that this website is going to spur me on to great things with regards to my endeavors to make money with adsense. With that in mind I’ve decided to share the highs and lows of my journey with the online community in the hope that if I’m held accountable for my failures I’ll be motivated to ensure that I reach any goals I set.

In order to do this I’ll have to divulge past money made from adsense so we all know where I’m starting from and where I want to be in the future. The money made from adsense up to this point doesn’t make for very exciting reading, however things are going to change in the months to come with large monthly payouts from the Big G being deposited directly into my bank account every month.

Money Made From Adsense So Far

My account went live last July and earnings have been more or less increasing month on month since then as you can see from the stats:

  • July: $1.21
  • August: $0.49
  • September: $6.04
  • October: $3.72
  • November: $44.36
  • (In November my documentary site which had been online since July and provides the majority of my adsense income suddenly got a very welcome boost up the SERPS from Google.

  • December: $71.58
  • January: $71.03
  • February: $89.96
  • March: $101.81
  • (Its only the 25th of March at the time of writing so I’m course to make around $115 this month.)

Make Money From Adsense – Goal Setting

Of all the actions we can take to put us on the right track to an improved financial situation setting goals is perhaps the most important. If we don’t have a set numerical goal to strive for its all too easy to make excuses when things don’t go to plan and even easier to put off doing unpleasant tasks which we know are crucial to achieving the success we desire.

Having said that I’m not entirely sure how much I should be aiming to make from Adsense. We’ve all heard the rumors of people making $100’s every day from adsense while they sit on the beach sipping pina coladas, but I’m going to keep my feet on the ground and reach for a number I feel is realistically obtainable if I put the required work in to make money from Adsense.

The best day I’ve had so far earned me $13 and that’s pretty much the only guide I have to what is possible in this Money From Adsense game. I reckon if I can make it to a point that I’m making $50 a day on a consistent basis then I’ll be very happy with my returns and I feel this figure is realistically achievable, so that’s the number I’m going to pin on the wall and aim for over the next three months. If you’re planning to make money with adsense make sure you have your own goals and do everything in your power to ensure you fulfill them.

MY GOAL: Make $50 per day from Adsense by July 1st 2009

Wish Me Luck!
